Nearly everyone would answer the above question with “yes”, and brag about their safety program, many just don’t have a safety culture. Most companies are judged on their safety culture by TRIR (a function of work hours) and EMR. These two items are a function of honesty and insurance claims. Want to see a real safety culture, try these three tests:
- Look at their web and marketing photos. Is their marketing literature or project photos void of safety issues?
- Visit another jobsite – Are work areas demarcated, people wearing gloves, hard hats, safety glasses?
- Ask for a current project safety plan – Is there a written safety plan with hospital route?
If the above three answers are “no”, it is unlikely the contractor has a true safety culture and really just has some good luck.
