Dirty Dirt: The hazards of soil pollution, and what to do about it

SoilcontamSoil pollution is the build-up of toxic substances in concentrations high enough to be hazardous to human health, wildlife and the natural ecosystem. Contaminated soil can have serious health effects on humans, as well as the environment.

Health effects on humans include organ damage, increased risk of cancer, and bioaccumulation, or the transfer of pollution throughout the food chain. Regular monitoring of soil quality can help prevent exposure to dangerous contaminants.

But what do you do if you think your soil might be polluted? EFS provides complete and innovative remediation services for addressing contaminated sites. Our remediation services include: demolition, excavation, transportation and disposal of contaminated soil, construction and installation of in-situ remediation systems, and more. OSHA launches occupational hearing safety competition

ear plugThe U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Mine Safety and Health Administration, in partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, have launched a competition “…with the dual goals of inspiring creative ideas and raising business awareness of the market for workplace safety innovation,” according to a recent OSHA press release.

Twenty-two million workers risk losing their hearing from workplace noise hazards, costing businesses an estimated $242 million annually in workers’ compensation, according to the press release. The “Hear and Now – Noise Safety Challenge” campaign aims to help decrease those numbers. The competition, open to the general public, encourages participants to create technology that will improve occupational hearing protection. Suggested topics detailed in the press release include:

  • Technology that will enhance employer training and improve effective use of hearing protection.
  • Technology that alerts workers when hearing protection is not blocking enough noise to prevent hearing loss.
  • Technology that allows workers to hear important alerts or human voices while remaining protected from harmful noise.

Ten finalists of the competition will be invited to present their ideas to a panel of judges on October 27 in Washington D.C. Idea submissions are due by September 30. To learn more about the competition, or submit ideas, click here.

Who We Are – Part 1:The History of EFS

Safety Boots HardhatEnvironmental Field Services, Inc. (EFS) was established in 1994 to provide high quality, service oriented, technical field support to the environmental and engineering consulting industry. Our goal has always been to provide innovative environmental investigation and remediation services to private industry, and federal and state government agencies. We started as one of the first adopters of direct push technology in the state of Indiana. At our inception, we recognized a lack of environmental contractors capable of providing innovative construction and investigation services, understanding the regulatory requirements, prioritizing safety first and assisting in the client’s objectives of obtaining site closure. EFS started with four employees and a Geoprobe©.

As of today, EFS has provided this quality, innovative services to clients throughout the continental United States. We have provided investigation and remediation services to a wide variety of clients directly and indirectly through environmental consultants and engineers, including:

  • Industrial Facilities
  • U.S. Navy
  • U.S. Air Force
  • U.S. Coast Guard
  • Department of Energy
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
  • U.S. Army
  • Local Fire Departments
  • State Regulatory Agencies
  • National Guard
  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

With our focus on leading edge technology, quality service and project safety, EFS has expanded services and grown to approximately 50 employees, and has done work in 28 states. We have performed investigation and remediation services on sites contaminated with dioxins, radioactive wastes, PCBs, chlorinated solvents, asbestos, petroleum, heavy metals, unexploded ordinance and cyanides. We have performed demolition on missile silos, large industrial facilities, gas stations and firing ranges.

Building on our direct-push and investigation experience, EFS began implementing in-situ chemical oxidation remedies at sites in 2001. To date, we have addressed numerous sites impacted with chlorinated solvents, hydrocarbons and metals using a variety of injection methods and oxidants. We have also successfully performed sustainable remediation utilizing phytoremediation for the past 10 years. Through the years, EFS has developed a reputation for designing and performing high quality solutions to difficult environmental and geotechnical issues in a cost-effective manner while maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction.

EFS is a small business enterprise dedicated to providing technical field support for all types of geotechnical and environmental projects. Throughout our history, EFS has been committed to providing a safe work environment for our employees and our customers. Our commitment to safety is shown in our comprehensive Health and Safety Program which has resulted in an Experience Modification Rate (EMR) of 0.74 and a Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) well below the national industry average.
